  • UP Man Gets Life In Jail For Killing Stepmother Over Land Dispute

According to the prosecution, the woman was attacked with a sharp weapon on her neck, leading to her death.

A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of culpable homicide of his stepmother nearly five years ago over a family dispute, police said.

Additional Sessions Judge Gyan Prakash Tiwari also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him for the crime.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on October 3, 2020, in Parasiya village under the Rasra police station limits, where 45-year-old Tara Devi was attacked with a sharp weapon on her neck, leading to her death.

An FIR was lodged based on a written complaint by Tara Devi, in which she named her husband Shribhagwan Chaurasia and stepson Dharmveer Chaurasia alias Pankaj as accused and relevant sections of the erstwhile Indian Penal Code were levelled against them. After investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against both.

Police said Shribhagwan Chaurasia had two marriages. From his first marriage, he had three daughters and a son, Pankaj. While two daughters were already married, the family was preparing for the third daughter’s wedding. Pankaj had reportedly been pressuring his stepmother Tara Devi to sell land purchased in her name to fund the marriage.

The dispute over the sale of the land escalated, culminating in Pankaj killing Tara Devi with a sharp weapon.

Ballia Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh said on Thursday, Additional Sessions Judge Gyan Prakash Tiwari, after hearing both sides, found Dharmveer Chaurasia alias Pankaj guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.

However, due to lack of evidence, the court acquitted Shribhagwan Chaurasia, Tara Devi’s husband, in the case.

  • Delhi Chief Minister Flags Off New DEVI Electric Buses, Inaugurates Narela Depot

Rekha Gupta said the depot was completed in just 90 days and claimed it reflects the BJP government’s commitment to deliver on promises made to Delhi residents.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 105 new orange-coloured DEVI (Delhi EV Inter-connector) electric buses and inaugurated the newly built Sector A9 depot in Narela, calling it a step towards cleaner and more efficient public transport for the capital.

Ms Gupta said the depot was completed in just 90 days and claimed it reflects the BJP government’s commitment to deliver on promises made to Delhi residents.

She also attacked the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of pushing Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) into losses and fostering a corrupt system.

“Buses are Delhi’s lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced, and corruption seeped in,” she said. Referring to the CAG report, Gupta claimed that DTC had incurred losses amounting to Rs 65,000 crore during the earlier regime.

She alleged that even the free bus ride scheme for women was marred by corruption and panic buttons were installed “just for show”.

Highlighting features of the new nine-metre-long electric buses, Gupta said they are equipped with air conditioning, panic buttons, and real-time monitoring systems. “When we removed paper tickets and moved to cards, AAP spread lies that women would no longer travel for free. But the move was only to curb corruption,” she said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, who was present at the event, said the previous government denied people their right to better buses. “These buses should have arrived by last monsoon, but the former government failed to deliver. Today, the BJP is fulfilling that promise,” he said.

He said that earlier DEVI buses were green in colour, and this is the first time an entire fleet of orange-coloured buses has been introduced. This adds more vibrancy, and we will continue increasing their numbers, as we have been doing since the launch of the DEVI buses.

Delhi BJP leader Yogender Chandolia dismissed AAP’s claim that this was just a rebranding exercise. “If these were AAP’s buses, they would have been on the roads months ago. These are new buses, purchased and brought in under the BJP. AAP never procured small electric buses – they reused old ones,” he said.

Chandolia said the new compact DEVI buses, with seating for 23 and standing space for 17 passengers, are ideal for navigating Delhi’s narrow lanes and will benefit people. “This is the real Rekha Gupta Model – “clean, modern, and efficient public transport,” he added.

Currently, Delhi operates around 2,000 electric buses, and officials said the number will continue to rise, with a goal of achieving 100 per cent electrification of the bus fleet by 2027.

When the teams blocked the road and signalled him to stop, he opened fire on the police party, the officer said.

One of the bullets hit the bulletproof jacket of a police officer, the DCP said, adding that the team retaliated in self-defence and Vinay sustained a bullet injury in his right leg.

He was overpowered and taken to a hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment, he added.

A case has been registered, and further legal proceedings are underway.

  • Gujarat Education Model In Delhi Soon? Minister Ashish Sood Visits Surat School

As part of his educational tour, Minister Sood visited a school run by the Surat Municipal Corporation, where he reviewed classroom activities and the integration of smart technologies in everyday learning.

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood today visited Gujarat’s Surat to study the state’s newly implemented, technology-driven education model.

As part of his educational tour, Minister Sood visited Suman High School No. 6 in Udhna, a school run by the Surat Municipal Corporation, where he reviewed classroom activities and the integration of smart technologies in everyday learning. Mr Sood also interacted with students to assess the effectiveness and impact of smart boards.

Praising the school’s AI and Robotics Lab, Mr Sood announced plans to bring a similar model to Delhi government schools. “Gujarat has made remarkable strides in integrating technology with education. The state has set up over one lakh smart classrooms, and this has transformed learning outcomes,” he said. “We will work to bring this model to Delhi so our students can also benefit from AI, robotics, and digital learning platforms.”

Ashish Sood took a swipe at the previous AAP government, calling their Delhi model a “failure.” He said, “The so-called Delhi education model and its so-called education minister, who was jailed for the liquor scam, have failed. Despite being the national capital with all the resources, Delhi’s government schools are running with just a few hundred smart boards. On the other hand, Gujarat, which faces challenges every year in various districts due to rains, has over one lakh smart classrooms. This clearly exposes the failure of the so-called Delhi education model…”

Mr Sood was accompanied by senior education officials, including the District Education Officer of Surat, representatives from the Municipal Primary Education Committee, and other administrative authorities to observe how National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is being implemented on the ground.

  • Rohit Sharma Describes Two‑Day Hotel Quarantine Before India vs Pakistan T20 at World Cup

Rohit Sharma shared some intriguing details from the build-up to India vs Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup

Retired from two of the three formats, Rohit Sharma has now got the time to sit back, relax, and look back at some of his recent achievements in international cricket. Though the ODI World Cup dream still remains unfulfilled for Rohit, he did manage to lead the national team to the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 titles recently. These events also included some gruelling contests against Pakistan, India’s arch-rivals

During an interview on JioHotstar, Rohit shared some intriguing details from India’s T20 World Cup campaign, especially as the team was preparing for the match against Pakistan.

“Before the India vs Pakistan match, we were told there was a threat – something was going on. So, two days before the game, we weren’t allowed to step out of the hotel. The atmosphere started building from there,” Rohit said on JioHotstar.

Though Indian captains often dub matches against Pakistan as ‘just another contest’, Rohit admitted that the statement isn’t really true.

“We were ordering food in, and the hotel was so packed you could barely walk. Fans, media – everyone was there. That’s when you realise this isn’t just another match – something special is about to happen. As soon as we got near the stadium, it already felt like a celebration – Indian fans, Pakistani fans, all dancing and enjoying themselves,” he added.

“I’ve played so many India-Pakistan games now – I’ve lost count – but that pre-match energy, that feeling… It’s always something else. Nothing compares to it,” he further said.

In the T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan, it was Rishabh Pant who scored 42 off 31 balls in an innings that saw the Indian team being dismissed for 119 in 19 overs.

“We just wanted Rishabh to be Rishabh – do all the things he does best, unsettle the bowlers, play freely. And he did that perfectly. His innings was around 42, and on that pitch, that’s as good as scoring 70.”

In the match, Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be the team’s saviour again, with three wickets to his name, helping the team secure a 6-run win.

“With Bumrah, you’ve got to be proactive in how you use him. He’s a wicket-taker, and at the same time, he’s not going to leak runs. So, how do you balance that, especially when the opposition is chasing at a run-a-ball? Arshdeep has been phenomenal too,” said Rohit Sharma.

“Over the last two years, there’s a reason he’s become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is – he’s a really smart bowler. So, with both of them, my focus was on how to use their remaining overs strategically,” he added.

  • U.S. Interceptor Stockpile Depleted in Intense 12-Day Defense of Israel

The THAAD deployment to Israel came with challenges as supporting allies in conflict zones would mean using resources that could affect military readiness and future deployment.

The United States used up a total of 15 to 20 per cent of the country’s advanced anti-missile system or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) to bolster the defence against Iran’s aerial strikes during the 12-day conflict in which Israel and the US struck nuclear facilities.

According to Military Watch Magazine, an estimate of 60-80 interceptors were utilised during the conflict. A single launch of a THAAD interceptor costs between $12-15 million, so the entire cost of these interceptors sits between $810 million to $1.215 billion. This figure dwarfs the cost of Iran’s missile barrages. This asymmetric cost of defence versus offence is not sustainable in the long term or multi-front conflicts.

Per the Wall Street Journal, the US had restocked the THAAD system set up in Israel in 2024.

Iran had launched a barrage of missiles on cities across Israel in response to attacks on its nuclear and military facilities. They included models such as Ghadr, Emad, Kheibar Shekan, and the Fattah-1 hypersonic missile, which is hard to intercept as it travels at up to Mach 15.

The THAAD deployment to Israel came with challenges as supporting allies in conflict zones would mean using resources that could affect military readiness and future deployment.

The THAAD system was designed to counter the expanding missile capabilities of nations like North Korea and Iran as they were pursuing medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles capable of delivering conventional or nuclear warheads.

Moreover, the United States produces only about 50-60 THAAD interceptors annually, which means it could take years to replenish what it just expended in 11 days.

The war between Israel and Iran came to an end after US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a “complete and total ceasefire” had been reached by both the parties. In the end, the US-Israel campaign has managed to contain, not defeat, Iran. Nuclear sites were hit. Military leadership was shaken. But Iran’s regime, and its nuclear ambition, remain intact.

  • Six-Year-Old Girl’s Father Flies to Rescue Son After Drug Bust in Mauritius

The six-year-old was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father.

A six-year-old British boy was detained in Mauritius after customs officials found 14 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside his suitcase. According to The Telegraph, the child was detained alongside seven other people at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport on Sunday. The group was reportedly carrying more than 161 kilograms of cannabis, worth 1.6 million pounds (approximately Rs 18.8 crore), hidden in the luggage. Seven of the suspects were British, including the boy whose luggage contained 24 packages of drugs wrapped in clear cellophane.

The group was stopped at the main international airport in Mauritius as they disembarked from a British Airways flight from Gatwick, per the outlet. The boy’s mother was also arrested and had 17kg hidden in her own bags. The eighth suspect was reported to be a Romanian living in Britain. He was allegedly holding 32 packages of cannabis.

Mauritian authorities described the use of a child to transport drugs as “outrageous and inhumane”, adding, “This is one of the most revolting cases we have encountered in recent years”.

The boy was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father.

Authorities discovered 11 Apple AirTags, suggesting links to a drug gang. The drugs cache was found during a joint operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport. Officials are treating the group as part of an organised crime network responsible for smuggling drugs from Europe to Mauritius.

The seven suspects, 5 women and 2 men, have been charged with drug trafficking and placed in custody. They appeared at Mahebourg court on the island’s south-eastern coast on Monday, with all remaining in pre-trial detention.

Authorities also carried out a series of targeted raids on hotels containing British nationals after police received a lead that more foreign passengers may have been transporting drugs. No arrests were made at any of the three locations searched
